Digital Gold Loan Pledging Process Interest Rates And Disbursal

Digital gold loans have made borrowing against jewellery much easier. A customer can now begin an application through a bank website or mobile app, complete parts of the documentation digitally, receive money directly in a bank account and later make repayments online. Some lenders also allow existing customers to draw fresh loans or re-pledge gold digitally without repeating the complete branch process.

However, a digital gold loan should not be confused with a loan against digital gold purchased through an app. A regulated gold loan is normally secured by physical gold jewellery, ornaments or eligible gold coins. Under the RBI’s current rules, pledged gold must be properly assayed, documented and stored securely by the lender.

For a first-time pledge, borrowers should therefore expect physical verification of the jewellery even if the application starts online. The digital part mainly makes application, account management, disbursal and repayment quicker.

What Is a Digital Gold Loan?

A digital gold loan is a loan against physical gold where a significant part of the borrowing process is handled through digital channels.

Depending on the lender, customers may be able to:

  • Apply through an app or website
  • Complete preliminary eligibility checks
  • Submit KYC details
  • Link a bank account
  • Receive the sanctioned amount digitally
  • Pay interest online
  • Make principal payments
  • Check outstanding balance
  • Download account statements
  • Renew or re-pledge eligible loans
  • Obtain top-up finance where permitted

The gold itself still acts as collateral.

Manappuram Finance, for example, states that its Online Gold Loan facility requires customers to first pledge gold at a branch and register for OGL. After that, eligible customers can access funds and manage the loan through the app or website while the gold remains pledged.

Can You Get a Gold Loan Without Physically Pledging Gold?

Generally, no.

Submitting an online application does not eliminate the need to pledge the actual gold.

The RBI requires lenders to have a standardised procedure for checking:

  • Purity
  • Gross weight
  • Net gold weight
  • Deductions for stones and other materials

The borrower must be present while the collateral is assayed at the time of sanction. The lender must also issue a certificate or e-certificate showing details such as purity, weight, deductions, image and assessed value of the pledged jewellery.

Therefore, advertisements saying “online gold loan” should normally be understood as digitally enabled borrowing against physical gold, not a completely unsecured online loan.

Which Gold Can Be Pledged?

Under the present RBI framework, eligible collateral includes:

  • Gold jewellery
  • Gold ornaments
  • Eligible gold coins

A lender cannot normally grant a gold loan against primary gold such as:

  • Gold bars
  • Bullion
  • Gold biscuits treated as primary gold
  • Gold ETFs
  • Gold mutual-fund units
  • Other financial assets backed by gold

The aggregate limit for gold ornaments pledged for loans to one borrower is 1 kilogram, while eligible gold coins are limited to 50 grams.

Individual lenders may set lower limits.

How Digital Gold Loan Pledging Works Step By Step

Step 1: Apply Through the Lender

Start through the official:

  • Mobile application
  • Internet banking platform
  • Website
  • Branch-assisted digital channel

For example, SBI currently allows customers to apply for its Personal Gold Loan through the YONO app as well as through a branch.

Enter only genuine personal information and avoid loan apps that are not connected with an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC.

Step 2: Complete KYC

The lender verifies the borrower’s identity.

Typical documents can include:

  • Aadhaar
  • PAN
  • Passport or other accepted identity proof
  • Address proof
  • Photograph
  • Bank account details

Existing customers whose KYC is already complete may require fewer documents.

SBI, for example, currently provides simplified documentation for existing fully KYC-compliant customers compared with new-to-bank applicants.

Step 3: Present the Gold for Valuation

The jewellery must be assessed before the lender knows the final eligible loan amount.

The appraisal checks:

  • Carat purity
  • Gross weight
  • Stones
  • Fasteners
  • Lac, strings or other material
  • Net eligible gold weight

Only the actual gold content counts for valuation.

A 40-gram necklace containing 6 grams of stones and other non-gold material will not normally be treated as 40 grams of eligible gold.

Step 4: Lender Applies the Reference Gold Price

Under the current RBI rules, collateral is valued according to actual purity using the lower of:

  • Average closing price over the preceding 30 days, or
  • Previous day’s closing price

for the relevant purity, using prices published by IBJA or an eligible SEBI-regulated commodity exchange.

Making charges, GST paid when buying the jewellery and the value of gems are not added.

Step 5: Loan-to-Value Ratio Is Applied

After determining the eligible value of the gold, the lender applies the Loan-to-Value or LTV ratio.

For consumption gold loans, the current maximum RBI limits are:

Loan Amount Maximum LTV
Up to ₹2.5 lakh 85%
Above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh 80%
Above ₹5 lakh 75%

These are maximum limits. A lender can choose a lower LTV under its own product rules.

Simple Example

Suppose the eligible value of pledged jewellery is ₹3 lakh.

If an 80% LTV applies:

₹3,00,000 × 80% = ₹2,40,000

The theoretical maximum loan would therefore be approximately ₹2.40 lakh, subject to the lender’s scheme and credit rules.

Step 6: Review the Key Fact Statement

Before accepting the digital loan, check the Key Fact Statement or KFS carefully.

It should help you understand:

  • Interest rate
  • Annual Percentage Rate where applicable
  • Processing fee
  • Appraisal charges
  • Repayment tenure
  • Penal charges
  • Other applicable costs

RBI rules require charges relating to matters such as assaying and auction to be properly disclosed in the loan documentation and KFS.

Do not accept a loan merely because the app shows a high amount per gram.

Digital Gold Loan Interest Rates

There is no single digital gold loan interest rate in India.

Rates depend on:

  • Bank or NBFC
  • Loan amount
  • Repayment option
  • Customer profile
  • Loan tenure
  • Product type
  • Applicable lender benchmark

As a current bank example, SBI listed the following rates as of June 16, 2026:

  • 12-month bullet gold loan: 15% p.a.
  • EMI gold loan: 10% p.a.
  • Gold Loan Overdraft: 10% p.a.

These rates are subject to change with bank policy.

NBFC rates can differ considerably. Customers should compare the actual rate stated in the sanction terms rather than assuming all online gold loans are cheaper than branch loans.

Bullet Loan vs EMI Gold Loan

Digital gold loans may offer different repayment structures.

Bullet Repayment

The principal and interest are payable at or before maturity.

Under current RBI rules, consumption gold loans with bullet repayment are limited to a maximum tenure of 12 months, although eligible loans may subsequently be renewed subject to conditions.

EMI Repayment

Principal and interest are repaid gradually through instalments.

SBI, for example, currently permits EMI-based Personal Gold Loan repayment for up to 36 months.

Overdraft Facility

Some banks provide an overdraft against pledged gold. Interest is normally charged according to the amount actually utilised, subject to the lender’s conditions.

The best structure depends on whether the borrower expects a lump-sum repayment or steady monthly cash flow.

How Is a Digital Gold Loan Disbursed?

Loan disbursal is one of the areas where the process has become strongly digital.

The current RBI directions state that lenders should generally disburse gold loans into the borrower’s bank account.

For bank transfers:

  • The loan should go to the borrower’s own account.
  • It should not normally be transferred to an unrelated third-party account.
  • Repayments should also flow directly between the borrower and lender rather than through an unauthorised intermediary.

SBI states that its Personal Gold Loan is normally sanctioned on the same day and credited to the customer’s account.

Manappuram’s OGL service similarly credits digitally drawn loan amounts to the registered savings bank account.

Actual processing time depends on completion of appraisal, KYC and lender checks.

Can Existing Gold Be Used for Fresh Online Disbursal?

This is one of the most useful features of some digital gold-loan systems.

Where gold is already securely pledged and the customer has completed the lender’s digital registration, fresh drawing, re-pledging or renewal may be possible without carrying the jewellery back to the branch every time.

Manappuram, for example, allows eligible registered OGL customers to obtain a new digital loan against gold already pledged after settling the existing account, subject to its product rules.

RBI rules also permit renewal and top-up loans if:

  • The borrower makes a formal request.
  • The existing account is standard.
  • Permissible LTV is maintained.
  • Required credit assessment is completed.

For a bullet loan, accrued interest must be paid before renewal.

Is CIBIL Score Required?

Gold loans are secured by jewellery, so the approval process can be simpler than for an unsecured personal loan.

However, current RBI rules require a detailed assessment of repayment capacity when the total gold-backed loan amount exceeds ₹2.5 lakh.

Banks and NBFCs may also check credit history according to their own policies.

Therefore, having gold of sufficient value does not guarantee unlimited borrowing.

Can Digital Gold Loan Be Repaid Online?

Yes, many lenders provide online repayment facilities through:

  • Net banking
  • Debit card
  • UPI
  • Mobile app
  • Lender website

Manappuram’s digital system, for example, allows customers to pay principal or interest and view statements online.

After full repayment, the physical jewellery still needs to be collected according to the lender’s release process.

What Happens After Full Repayment?

RBI requires lenders to return pledged gold on the same day after full repayment or settlement, or at the latest within seven working days.

If a lender-attributable delay continues beyond that period, compensation of ₹5,000 per day becomes payable under the current directions.

Borrowers should verify the ornaments against the valuation certificate when collecting them.

FAQs

1. Can I get a digital gold loan without visiting a branch even once?

For a completely new pledge, physical appraisal of the gold is generally necessary. Some lenders allow later online drawings or re-pledges because the gold has already been deposited and valued.

2. Is a digital gold loan available against gold purchased through digital-gold apps?

Normally no. RBI-regulated gold loans covered by these rules are against eligible physical gold jewellery, ornaments or coins, not digital gold balances, ETFs or gold mutual-fund units.

3. Is an online gold loan cheaper than a normal branch gold loan?

Not necessarily. Digital processing can be more convenient, but interest depends on the lender and scheme. Compare the interest rate, APR, processing charges, appraisal costs and repayment conditions before borrowing.

4. Can the loan amount be credited to someone else’s bank account?

Normally no. Under RBI’s current framework, bank-transfer disbursal should be made to the borrower’s own account rather than an unrelated third-party account.
